Rosco got it right, you need to give the texture time to cure. Where you have to hide blemishes, go a little heavier on the texture, but to knock it down, don't mess with a squeegie, cut a 4 foot 1x4, or 2x4 and use that instead....applying the same pressure with each p, it covers a whole lot more ground than a squeegie.
