Explain how you can boil water at less than 100 degreese celsius.?

i put down Go up in altitude ( go on a mountain) and water will boil at a lower temperature. But i'm not sure why this is true. Why does water boil at a lower temperature on a mountain than at sea level? why does the difference in atmospheric pressure cause the water to boil at a lower temperature?
